Study in Thailand
Aug 03, 2010
Many international students come to Thailand because they are curious about the Thai ways of learning.
Study system
The Thai teaching system can be described as more teacher centered than in the Netherlands. In general there are more lectures and there is more note-taking. There is more emphasis on repetition and learning. Students in general have more classes and will have to do less self study than in the Netherlands. Compulsory education is up to and including lower secondary education.
Study schedule
Classes in universities usually start at 8am. The classes of major subjects can last for 3 hours, the whole morning. This is to utilize the fact that all participants are presented there since some students and probably the lecturer have to travel for a long time to come to class.
Facilities
Facilities are good and comparable with facilities on universities in the Netherlands. On some private universities facilities will be even better than on Dutch universities. For example, some universities have impressive auditoriums and large sport facilities with swimming pools, and gymnasiums. There are overhead projectors and desktop or laptop computer in every classroom.
Grading
The grading system in Thai universities ranges from A to D, with A is excellent and D is very poor. F is failure, I is incomplete, and W is withdraw. Grades are given by curving method, which is measuring a student against the rest of the class. Therefore, it is likely that students from different classes who receives the same grade have disparity of knowledge in the same subject.
