Study programmes on offer

In Thailand, higher education is offered at universities, technical institutes, vocational and technical colleges, teachers colleges and professional colleges for nursing, police or military study programmes.
The number of private universities is gradually increasing to meet the growing demand for higher education. In 2005, there were 64 public universities and 56 private higher education institutions. These institutions fall within the Private Higher Education Institutions Division of the Ministry of Education, which is responsible for approving new institutes.

Types of institutions
Thai higher education can be divided into two different types of institutions:
1.    Institutions that fall under the Ministry of Education, such as state universities and private institutions of higher education, technical/vocational and agriculture institutions, and teacher-training institutes.
2.    Specialist training institutes that fall under a different Ministry. For instance, institutions for Thai classical arts, drama and music fall under the Ministry of Culture.
The most prestigious higher education institutions are the public universities, such as those in Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, Mahidol, Kasetsart, Silpakorn, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Prince of Songkhla and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology.
