Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology (CPE)

The two-year master program Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology (CPE) is embedded in the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and focuses on the psychosocial aspects of health and disease. You have access to CPE with a background in many different disciplines, such as psychology, biology, medicine, biomedical sciences and pharmaceutical sciences. Moreover, you can choose your own field of specialization: Public Health, Health Psychology or Lifecourse Epidemiology.

The UMCG coordinates large cohort studies such as LifeLines and TRAILS (Tracking Adolescents Individual Lives Survey). LifeLines follows about 165 thousand volunteers of three generations for at least 30 years in order to collect data on the important question of why people age differently. If you choose CPE, you will have a chance to work with these large data sets and make your personal contribution to ongoing academic debates.

The first year of CPE is focused on broadening your knowledge and skills in areas such as research methodology and medical statistics, psychology, medicine and epidemiology. You also write your own research proposal and select an individual master thesis project.

At the end of your master you have a chance to write and present your own PhD proposal. CPE will not only leave you in a perfect position to continue with doctoral studies, you will also be qualified to conduct health research in the public and private sectors.

Are you interested? Come to Groningen first to see whether CPE is something for you and apply for a research voucher within the Abel Tasman Talent Program! Visit www.groningenbiomed.com for more information and get in touch with CPE students or alumni. Read their stories and get inspired!

Only excelling students with a passion for research qualify for this selective master’s program. You will need to rank among the top of all candidates applying to CPE to be eligible for one of our UMCG scholarships presented here under the name Orange Tulip Scholarship.

Skype interviews are part of the admissions process. We additionally offer the opportunity to visit Groningen for one month with a partial scholarship (“Research Voucher”) in our Abel Tasman Talent Program. This allows you to get some hands-on experience at a department of your choice. A perfect way to find out whether Groningen is the place for you to start your career in research!

Do you want to be an excelling (bio)medical researcher? Do you want to work with leading scientists and state-of-the-art techniques? Do you want to develop your own PhD research project? Do you belong to the best of your class? If the answer to all of these questions is yes, then check out the Medical and Pharmaceutical Drug Innovation (MPDI) program at the University of Groningen/University Medical Center Groningen.

This two-year top master program prepares you for a career in (bio)medical research as a leading scientist. Our focus is on molecular and translational medical research, from the pathophysiology of diseases to the development of drugs and how they work. Our University Medical Center has excellent facilities for (pharmaco)genomics, proteomics and in vivo (animal) and in vitro (cell) imaging.

We offer interactive small-group teaching in an international and multidisciplinary environment. The 2016 class includes students from many different countries with bachelor’s degrees in areas such as in biology, (bio)chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences and medicine.

You will specialize in one of the following tracks:
• Oncology
• Medical Neurosciences and Neurological diseases
• Infection and Immunity
• Medical Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases
• Medical System biology and Bioinformatics
• Drug innovation

You will learn how to creatively apply knowledge and become a critical and analytical scientist. Moreover, you can specialize in your field of interest and receive coaching from our top scientists. The MPDI program is tailor-made: you yourself choose your two research internships. And finally, a PhD competition at the end of the second year offers you a chance to design and defend a research proposal and get a scholarship for further PhD studies!
